Age Gracefully...LATER!
Generally there are two types of wrinkles—dynamic or the ones that occur with a specific movement or static wrinkles that are present without muscle contraction. Injectables can treat both types. Botox is a substance that inhibits muscle contraction. This will prevent dynamic lines from forming. Juvederm, and other similar medications, are fillers. If the wrinkle is not relaxed by Botox, this medicine will fill the wrinkle and give a smooth skin surface. Many patients will require Botox and a filler to get the optimal results.
Botox is administered in the office with a very fine needle to the various muscles that produce the wrinkles. The medicine will take effect over a few days with the maximum results in 7-10 days. The side effects are minimal and you can go on about your life immediately. Botox is clinically effective for 3-4 months and at time, the pretreatment picture will slowly return. To maintain the improved look, simply return for another treatment. The process takes a half hour or less. Botox can also be used for other specific looks. It is used to give a small, but noticeable eyebrow lift. Botox is very effective in treating the bands or strings that appear in the front of the neck. Botox can be used to prevent excessive sweating under the arms. Botox has been used over 20 years and extensively studied and found to be safe with very minor side effects. The injections have little or no pain.
Juvederm is a skin filler. It is a naturally occurring substance, hyaluronic acid, that when injected will fill a wrinkle or a natural space producing a smooth surface. The substance is inert and will be slowly absorbed by the body. Typically the filler lasts 9-12 months depending on the individual. As the pretreatment look returns the injection can be repeated. Juvederm is commonly used to fill wrinkles but can be used for other specialized purposes. Juvederm is used to fill lips to make them more full and plump. Nasolabial folds, the folds between the nose and cheek respond very well to Juvederm injections. There are other places it works well so please ask about your specific situation during your consultation. Juvederm does cause a bit of pain on injection. Some people prefer to have a block with local anesthetics. There is an “eraser” for Juvederm. This will dissolve the Juvederm if the cosmetic result is not what you want. |
